The floors of the baths
The Roman Villa della Linguella has an impressive variety of wall coverings and floor surfaces, including decorated polychrome mosaics and opus sectile flooring. This second technique involves inserting marble slabs of different origins into a mortar base, thus creating a decorative effect with a variety of colours and shapes. In a single room you can find marble slabs from Egypt, Greece, Asia Minor and Italy, allowing the reaches of the Roman Empire to be expressed through a single floor.
