The Black Madonna

This painting of the Black Madonna, housed on a marble altar, is a reproduction of the famous ebony statue of Nuestra Senora Morena from the sanctuary of Montserrat in Catalonia. The painting depicts the Virgin seated on a throne with the Child on her lap. The Virgin, dressed in wide red and blue drapes, holds a sphere in her right hand symbolising the world, from which a lily is sprouting in flower.

This work, by an unknown artist, is a precious artefact due to both its age, and to the crown of gold and precious stones on the heads of Mary and Jesus.
