Welcome to the sooty island, the island where iron flows through its veins. Welcome to Rio Marina, where the living rock shines under the sun and its essence is powerfully released. The smell of iron, mineral taste, a blood-red and ochre-yellow wound that stretches out and sinks into a turquoise sea is slowly reborn and healed, showing that nature is stronger than the human activity which has consumed it over three millennia.
Collection
The museum houses an important collection of minerals from the island, with numerous samples of exceptional beauty, set in a recreated blacksmith’s workshop containing original tools and materials found in abandoned mining sites. Visitors can also explore a life-size reconstruction of a miner’s shelter and a mining tunnel, all created using authentic artefacts found in mines which had been abandoned for more than 20 years. Finally, visitors can view photographic documentation of the old mines of Rio and Capoliveri, as well as sculptures which use old mining tools. Guided tours of the Rio mine depart from the museum on set days and times, allowing visitors to explore the old mining village, Caviere cave, wash house and the construction sites where local miners worked in the open air for 100 years.
