Located just below the imposing Pisan Fortress, the Marciana Park house connects the sea and the mountains, highlighting the environmental resources of Western Elba. It is an excellent opportunity to discover the ancient trades linked to granite and the chestnut woods which cover the slopes of Monte Capanne.
The Park House in Marciana is located near the Pisan Fortress. It covers an area of around 300 square metres and is divided into two main rooms dedicated to the land and sea of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. Information brochures produced by the Park Authority are available from the information desk at the entrance, and staff are also available to provide help and offer more detailed information.
In the first room, dedicated to the land, there are references to the genesis and geomorphological evolution of western Elba and Monte Capanne, with a hands-on exhibition of some typical minerals, and references to local history and culture, includuing silvo-pastoral agroforestry and the tools and equipment of daily agricultural life. To stimulate another of the visitor’s senses, there are odour diffusers of key local botanical essences. Finally, an ecorama depicting a Mediterranean maquis landscape describes the characteristic plants of the vegetation.
A special place where you can find naturalistic, environmental and historical information on the infinite richness of the territory.
After this section dedicated to the western part of Elba, we now move on to the eastern part of the island, represented by pictures and photographs, with the final display of sands (e.g. hematite) from various parts of the island.
After a walkway crossed by a waterfall, visitors enter the second room of the Park House, dedicated to the marine environment. At the entrance there are two computers with a link to the Park’s website; on the walls, a number of images illustrate the endemic plant and animal species.
On the opposite wall, an ecorama depicts the flora and fauna of the sea and the sandy and rocky coasts of the Tuscan Archipelago. There is a space dedicated to the rare Corsican seagull, adopted as the symbol of the Park, with a note on the ecology of this bird, which is at risk of extinction. Numerous images show the variety of animal and plant life that populates the Park, a marine aquarium with Mediterranean species and a panel with images of cetaceans.
Finally, visitors arrive at the projection room, which offers videos of the park, the monk seal and the Corsican seagull.
