Marvel at one of the most breath-taking views of the sea on the whole island of Elba from the highest point of the historic centre of Portoferraio. A key building in the complex defensive structure commissioned by Cosimo de Medici, the fort is now also a museum, hosting collections of contemporary art, coins, paintings and documents. The fort embodies the essence of Portoferraio, or Cosmopoli (Cosimo’s city) as it was originally named in honour of its founder, and transports visitors to a different world, full of unexpected surprises.
Collections
The Falcone Fort houses various exhibits which have become permanent exhibitions over time.
Tunnels of the former Territorial Anti-Aircraft Defence Command post
On the ground floor, immediately to the right after the imposing entrance door, visitors can explore the tunnels of the former Territorial Anti-Aircraft Defence Command post, open to the public since 2017.
Dating back to World War II, the rooms still retain their original structure and contain exhibits from the Navy and a collection of military artefacts, uniforms and machinery that tell the story of the fort’s history in the 1940s.
The heart of the defensive structure commissioned by Cosimo de Medici, with an important military history, is now home to a variety of exhibitions, from historical documents to contemporary art.
Cosmopolis – Portoferraio in the times of the Medici family
The exhibition, inaugurated in 2013, is spread over five rooms and tells the story of the Medici city through paintings, documents and maps, starting from its foundation in 1549 and continuing until the early 1700s.
The origins of Portoferraio can be explored through paintings and sketches which detail the original plan of the complex of fortifications first commissioned by Cosimo dei Medici. In this section it is also possible to admire some paintings by Giuseppe Maria Terreni, which show the urban evolution of the town.

Accessibilità
The Fortress is accessible thanks to the presence of a freight lift and lift connecting the first and second floors. Unfortunately, there is no foreign language support, guided tour service or audio-visual devices to make the complex and its contents accessible to blind or deaf people.
How to get there
Starting from the Palazzina dei Mulini, head left along Via del Falcone and continue until you find a winding path on the right leading to the entrance of the Fortress.
