Masterpieces from the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea and the Foresiana Art Gallery
Curated by Valentina Anselmi and Giovanna Coltelli
From 28 july to 5 novembre 2023
Foresiana Art Gallery, Portoferraio
You will have noticed the apparent contradiction in the title. Straight lines are eternally equidistant, never meeting, while incursion evokes the exact opposite; a direct collision. Yet these two apparently irreconcilable terms establish a dialogue, a reciprocal exchange, in which art inspires a voyage towards a new viewpoint from which to consider its history, at least with regard to the Island of Elba.
Like latter-day pirates the curators, both natives of Elba, have ransacked the deposits of the Museums where they work, in search of hidden treasures. Their booty has been meticulously selected .... working in parallel.
They have chosen and examined the links between artists who shaped the history of art in the late C19th and early C20 with connections to Elba: Vincenzo Ciardo, Antonio Ciseri, Giovanni Fattori, Edoardo Gordigiani, Llewellyn Lloyd, Plinio Nomellini and Telemaco Signorini.
The exhibition comprises twenty masterpieces from both the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome - Italy’s most important museum for art of this period - and the collection of the Pinacoteca Foresiana in Portoferraio – the island’s main civic museum.
These incursions reveal unexpected interconnections and hidden pathways, amazing us and showing us that collecting is also - and above all - a collective experience, its focus not just on purchasing decisions themselves but embracing a broader horizon, ignoring borders and reaching across seas of prejudices, difficulties and constraints. Deposits are opened and an inward-looking approach gives way before research, with a willingness to engage with apparently minor contexts and a not-so-distant elsewhere, where stories can interweave and acquire unexplored meanings. There are unexpected riches across the sea!
